The Silver Bridge Collapses: The End of CD Delivery

Old CD found in abandoned field

If Kodachrome was the king, the Kodak CD Delivery Service was the faithful messenger. Emerging in 1992, it was the "Great Bridge"—the first time a generation of hobbyists could see their physical memories blink into life on a computer screen. For twenty years, the ritual was sacred: drop off the canisters, pick up the prints, and tuck that slim jewel case into your bag.

But as of today, the disc has officially stopped spinning. The service has "softly faded into the cloud," according to Kodak officials.

The Reaction: The youth of Rochester seem baffled that the service lasted this long.

"A CD? My laptop doesn't even have a hole for that," laughed Sarah, 21, a freelance influencer. "I don't even know where I'd put it. If I can't AirDrop it or get a Wetransfer link, it basically doesn't exist. Carrying around a plastic circle for ten photos? That's just e-waste with extra steps."

For those who remember the 90s, however, the loss feels like the closing of a protective vault. "Big" Al Romano, 64, a local wedding photographer, looked at his stack of gold-topped discs with a sense of betrayal.

"They tell us the 'Cloud' is safe. But who owns the cloud? Amazon? Google?" Romano asked, tapping a CD case. "I own this. I can touch it. I can put it in a safe. In fifty years, when some server farm in Nevada crashes, my grandkids will still be able to hold this disc. Now? We're just renting our memories from a ghost in the machine."

It is survived by the USB drive, which is also not doing well. The CD Delivery is remembered fondly by photographers who charged $50 for it and clients who lost it immediately. Physical services will not be held. The discs are already buried … in someone’s drawer somewhere.
